Helen Elaine Steiner Rice (May 19, 1900 - April 23, 1981) was an American poet who wrote religious and inspirational verse.[i]

Life [ ]

She was born Helen Steiner in Lorain, Ohio on May 19, 1900. Her begetter, a railroad worker, died in the influenza epidemic of 1918.

She began piece of work for a public utility and progressed to the position of advertising manager, which was rare for a woman at that time. She also became the Ohio State Chairman of the Women's Public Data Commission of the Electric Light Association, and campaigned for women'southward rights and improved working conditions.[2]

In 1929 she married Franklin Dryden Rice, a bank vice-president in Dayton, Ohio. After the stock market crash in October that year, Franklin lost his job and his investments. He savage into a depression from which he never recovered, and committed suicide in 1932.[2] [iii]

Rice became a successful baron and lecturer, just constitute her most satisfying outlet in writing poesy for the greeting card visitor Gibson Greetings. Her poems received wide exposure in the 1960s when several were read past Aladdin on the poetry segment of the Lawrence Welk television set show.

The need for her poems became so dandy that her books are all the same selling steadily after many printings, and she has been acclaimed equally "America'southward beloved inspirational poet laureate".[3] [4]

She died on April 23, 1981, less than a month before her 81st birthday. She is cached in Elmwood Cemetery in Lorain.[i]

Writing [ ]

Rice's books of inspirational poetry have sold nearly vii,000,000 copies. Her strong religious organized religion and the power she had to express deep emotion gave her poems timeless appeal.[5]

Recognition [ ]

In a private ceremony on March xiv, 1981, Rice was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters by Mt. St. Joseph Higher.[vi]

Before her death she established the Helen Steiner Rice Foundation, to award grants to worthy charitable programs that assist the needy and the elderly. The Foundation continues today, nether the auspices of the Cleveland Museum Center. In addition to its charitable work, the Foundation hosts a Helen Steiner Rice website.[vii]

In 2002 an Ohio Historical Mark honoring Rice was installed in Lakeview Park in Lorain.[6]

Helen Steiner Rice Elementary School was opened in Lorain on October 14, 2007.[half-dozen]
